Liquor License: FromDolgen Midwest LLC, d/b/a Dollar General Store 16073, 36180 Lakeshore Blvd.
Ms. DePledge: Are there any comments regarding the liquor license permit at this time? Seeing none tonight we have a special guest in attendance and it is Mr. Felice from the Willoughby Elks to present a check to the Safety Town Account.
Mr. Felice: I am here on behalf of the Willoughby- Cleveland Elks Lodge No. 18. I would like to ask our other two members to stand and be recognized and they are Carl Kennedy who is the Exalted Ruler of our lodge that is a lofty term for someone who missed a meeting and who is voted in is credible. Rob Nardy is the past Exalted Ruler of our lodge and they are here to join me tonight in a presentation. Tonight I am here on behalf of the Elks Lodge as well as the Elks National Foundation which is the charitable arm of the benevolent order of Elks. The Elks National Foundation is the heart of the Elks and through this foundation we raise money throughout the year and the money is used for scholarships, Veterans programs, and community investment programs. The Elks are dedicated to improving the communities that we work in, live in, and we recreate in. I have been granted wide latitude as Grants Coordinator of the Lodge and I have two checks to present tonight. Selfishly I have picked the Eastlake Fire Department and I will explain why real quickly. My uncle was a resident of Eastlake for a number of years and Chief Whittington and I have had lengthy discussions about my uncle being a drain EMS Department. I have to tell you that the Fire Department has a lot more important things to do than to take care of someone who thinks that the world owes him something and I don’t think that there is a better way to put it than that. We actually gave you some money a couple of years ago and I think that we used that for mapping programs.
Chief Whittington: Actually we got the grant a couple of years ago and what we did is we bought a pre-planned programming set that is on the computers. It allows our members to the pre-planned buildings and we also use them for different kinds of strategy tactics. It is a big benefit to the Fire Department and it is not something that a lot of the resident’s or our elected officials get to see. They are in a book and it is the heart of what it is on going to business and buildings to allow us to be able to address things in a timely manner. It is a great benefit to the department.
Mr. Felice: This year we are focusing on safety and education with the money that we have collected and that we are going to distribute. Again Chief Whittington I would hope that this check is used for fire education.
Chief Whittington: Thank you very much sir and I appreciate it.
Mr. Felice: We have given a grant similar to this to the Mentor Fire Department for the Mentor Safety Village. This next check I have to tell you that I have taken a little bit more personal. Chris if you could come up here. Back in kindergarten I met a guy and his name was Mr. Allen. Mr. Allen and I became friends and as we were growing up we were pretty close and we lived a couple of streets away from each other. As we went through life and graduated high school and moved on with our lives we grew apart. I would see Mr. Allen occasionally and in passing I found out that he was an Auxiliary Officer in the City of Eastlake. I had mentioned that we had money available and whenever you come upon that you need some money to get a hold of me. Well Mr. Allen sees the opportunity right there and he was relentless and he told me about the Safety Town Program. We applied for the money and every week I would get a phone call from Mr. Allen. I would tell him that when we got it he would be the first to know. When he first instituted it and we gave you some money for that and this year we are going to donate another $500.00 to the Eastlake Safety Town. I want to tell you that I would both of these checks to be in Mr. Allen’s memory. Mr. Allen was committed to making the cities that he worked and lived in a better place and in what better way than to teach our youth a safe way to live and practice.
Chief Reik: We appreciate a club like the Elks to do stuff like this and to help have Mr. Allen’s name live on. I brought with me Sheri and she has been our go to person with Safety Town for the last couple of years. Ruth Marshall works with the Victim Advocates and they have been strong participants and there is a lot of work that goes into it. They coordinate with the schools to have kids volunteer. We have talked a number of times about Mr. Allen and it doesn’t surprise me that he would have you on speed dial. That’s how a lot of stuff has gotten into place. We are doing our best to keep everything up and going the way that it should be in his honor. Thank you again.
Mr. Felice: It has kept his memory around at the lodge and it has helped me on some programs. I am sure that I will be getting some phone calls from you guys if you need more money. Members of Council and the citizens of Eastlake thank you very much for allowing us to help you with your endeavors.
There were no further questions or comments.
