Class Summary:
Under periodic supervision of the Working Foreman, performs direct hands-on assigned tasks of major overhaul, repair, modification and testing of engines and equipment requiring skilled knowledge of mobile diagnostic and electrical equipment, appurtenances and procedures.
Essential Duties:
Major overhauls and repairs of all kinds of engines, torque converters and hydraulic systems on automobiles, trucks, construction and road equipment. Operates test equipment to locate sources of failure in electrical and ignition systems, diagnose and repair malfunctions and operate test equipment to adjust and validate proper repair. Keep records of vehicle and equipment repairs. Orders repair parts, monitors inventories of parts; monitors consumption of gasoline, oil, etc… Modifies vehicles and equipment for specific tasks, as required by state or federal laws. May use welding equipment to straighten and bend heavy steel for modification/repair. Performs other related duties as required, including but not limited to, road service calls, snow removal, housekeeping of areas, etc…. May also be assigned to other duties of a similar nature or level. May be exposed to extremes of weather elements and /or on call 24 hours, seven days a week including night shifts, occasional overtime or weekends. In absence of Working Foreman, may be required to act in a supervisory capacity.
Knowledge Required:
Must possess valid Ohio Driver’s License AND CDL (Commercial Driver’s License). Knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and equipment of the automotive, truck and equipment trades, knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines and diesel engines. Skilled knowledge of and experience in mechanics and procedures, safety practices and diagnostic equipment; certified in auto/truck mechanics and internal combustion and diesel engines, or combination of five years experience and schooling in the necessary skills and knowledge is a requirement for this position. Knowledge in hydraulic systems on cars, trucks, construction and road equipment is a plus. Ability to count and perform basic mathematical computations, and read instructions, labels and warning signs.
Skills Required:
Skills in use of and/power tools and diagnostic equipment. Skill in the diagnosis of operating defects. Skill in use of welding/fabrication equipment. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports. Ability to interpret written and oral instructions. Skill in communication; interpersonal skills and applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
Physical Activities/Requirements:
Lifting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, repetitive motions.
Heavy Work:
Exerting more than 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 35 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Probation Period: 90 Days per AFSCME Union Contract.
Pay Rate: Probation 90 days $25.39
After 90days $26.89
